SACHI is a modern, earthy retail and coffee shop combo founded by sisters Sachi and Chiyo Hartley. Opening in late October on Centinela Ave in Del Rey, CA., SACHI means happiness in Japanese and they hope to share that with you. Get your hands dirty with the Hartley duo at their trippin.on.plants Terrarium Workshop on October 1! They'll guide you and your green thumb in getting creative with nature and soaking up positive plant vibes ☼
SACHI is Del Rey's new local stop for coffee, plants and clothing. What inspired you to combine these elements in a single space?
We grew up working on the farm with our grandparents in Japan and instantly learned to appreciate plants. Chiyo has a background with fashion and wanted to share an eco-friendly approach by selling used, quality clothing. Short and sweet- we simply love coffee.
You’re working with quite a few friends on and offline to make this dream a reality. What’s your favorite part about collaborating with your community?
This has been the best part of this experience so far. Each of our friends are so talented in different arenas. Our favorite part would be watching them thrive in their expertise which allows us to get to know them on a different level. It's amazing to see people's eyes light up with passion while creating something together.
Why did you choose to open in Del Rey? What about the neighborhood speaks to you and your mission?
Del Rey kind of chose us. We love the neighborhood and its historical ties to Japanese culture.
Sustainability and ethics are huge for you guys. Can you tell us more about why you chose to work with Heart Coffee Roasters and Civil Rags?
The Heart Roasters family focused on building trusting and long-lasting relationships with their community from farmers to packagers to drinkers. We appreciate their ethics in finding farms who treat their employees right and in making sure that their farmers are getting fare wages. They are such a pleasure to work with and already feel like family to us. Not to mention- the coffee is amazingly delicious!
Civil Rags has been a passion project that came out of an ethical responsibility to the environment to minimize the amount of clothes that end up in landfills. Civil Rags realizes that people love fashion and will never stop wearing clothes, however, there is still a way to do it without feeling guilty for buying poor quality clothing that inevitably ends up in landfills. By purchasing used clothing made with quality fabrics, we are all able to reduce waste and look good doing it!
If you had to pick a single word to describe what you want people to feel in the SACHI space, what would that word be? Why?
SACHI means Happiness in Japanese and this is what we want to share with the community. Everyone deserves to enjoy happiness and if we are able to put a smile on someone's face, then we are happy as well.
