In an effort to help create the visual language that invites people to engage in public spaces, Noun Project is teaming up with the Office of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Goldhirsh Foundation to host a Great Streets Iconathon around the topic of livable communities. The goal is to create a set of universally recognizable symbols infused with metropolitan culture that act as graphic tools, and use them to inspire positive action and create literal “front porches” for our great neighborhoods.
The design workshop is open to the public, and will take place at a co-shop-work space residing on Venice Boulevard, in partnership with Mar Vista Art Dept. We encourage people from all walks of life to get involved and collaborate on how we can re-imagine our streets as vibrant, empowering, and safe places. City planners, graphic designers, and volunteers will work together on a range of community concepts like “shop local” and “walkability”.
LA Mayor's Office will kick off our discussion on Great Street concepts. Edward Boatman, co-founder of Noun Project, will present on semiotics and best practices for designing icons. Angie Jean-Marie, social innovator from Goldhirsh Foundation, will help connect the dots in support of re-imagining the future of Los Angeles.
Participants will be placed in groups with city planners and graphic designers, so everyone can contribute. Iconathons are organized to engage the general public in the design process. No design or art skills are necessary, all are welcome to participate.
The icons created from this event will be released into the public domain for the City of Los Angeles and printed on metal signs to live on our Great Streets for citizens to engage with.
